Rain Rain, Come Again !

It requires just a little homework to understand why rains are so dreaded in one country and so welcomed in another!

It brings to mind the rhyme- ‘Rain Rain go away, come again another day, little Johnny wants to play!” But one can understand the lack of appreciation- the rhyme originated in England where the weather is gloomy and damp all year long.In a hotter India, the seasonal rains are welcomed and prayed for, with numerous songs dedicated to downpours!

Children dislike the rains when they have to stay indoors, but love it when their mothers dish out hot pakoras and malpuas on a rainy day.To increase their appreciation of the gifts of the rainy season- lush greenery, flowers, the smell of wet mud etc, SAS took the junior school children for a ‘rainwalk’.

The 29th July was a perfect rainy day for such an experience. The little ones explored and plundered the garden to look for earthworms, mushrooms, and fish and lotuses in little ponds. The day concluded on a perfect note- and they were agog with excitement when they were served a delicious Corn Chat !

SAS School Elections

“Politics is a dirty game if YOU are playing dirty.”

This rejoinder by Mr. A.C. Kapur, Election Commissioner Gujarat was an eye opener for the students who voiced their concern about politics being a murky game. The E.C. addressed SAS students after declaring the results of the School Prefectorial Board elections and shared his views and aspirations about the future of the nation.

The SAS school elections were held on the 24th and 25th of the process was designed to replicate the Indian electoral process. The details were well executed. The nominations were filed as per the post, the manifesto declared, the candidates campaigned via speeches, and the secret ballot was cast in separate booths spread out all over the school campus.

But Shanti Asiatic went one step ahead. The entire electoral process was held sans paper! ALL voting was done online in contrast to the last elections where one thousand sheets of paper were used.

“It’s the need of the hour,” said the principal Mrs Anita Verma, taking pride in having a ‘paper-free’ election.

She went on to convey that the foremost purpose was not just to give the students a first hand experience of the electoral process, but also to help them understand the dynamics of leadership, to undertake and shoulder responsibilities.

That the election results were declared by Mr. A.C. Kapur- election commissioner of Gujarat was a prestigious moment for the SAS fraternity. The winning students rejoiced and now look forward to the Investiture Ceremony to be held on the 16th of July.

Shaping 'Green' Role Models - Reducation of Carbon Footprints

Shanti Asiatic School (SAS) focused on the impact of carbon footprints on the environment. Hiral Samantasinghar, a teacher says, "Students were taught about waste segregation and low carbon lifestyle. They learnt to use organic colours & save water during Holi by opting for 'tilak holi". The students were also part of a cycle rally.

They were encouraged to use old paper for origami. The paper objects created were used to decorate soft-boards. Making notepads out of leftover papers, using water paper in papermache activity to make pen stands was taught. This will lead to reduction in paper wastage. Consumption of natural and organic food was given importance. Activities that lead to degradation of the environment were brought to the notice of the students.

Visit to NCC Camp :: Shanti Asiatic School

26 June was a defining moment in the lives of many SASites when they had a first hand experience of getting acquainted with the NCC wing of the Indian Army. The role of the youth to develop comradeship, discipline, leadership qualities. The students were brought alive by a wonderful PPT on the beat of ”Hum Sab Bharitiya Hai” .It helped to develop a secular outlook, develop character and grow with the ideals of selfless service. The students were deeply in awe as they handled a wide variety of ammunition. They learnt how to load the rifles, uncock it and know their range. While most students enjoyed and took up firing seriously, there were quite a few who were very serious about taking up a career with the Armed Forces. Tracing the history of NCC from 1948, the year it was established, the Commanding Officer Col R.K.Singh gave a pep talk to the young SASites for the need to be trained in self defence.

He also mentioned about the need to harness “Women Power” and gave an overview of the premier training institute for them. The students were rejuvenated with national fervor. Surely we hope some of them will render their services to the nation by joining the armed force.
