Session on Parenting @ SAS

‘Parenting is probably the toughest task on the planet!’

Effective parenting has always been an important concern to the family. Appropriate parenting shapes the coming generations, and the way the next generation will behave, affecting the world around them. Knowing the merits of healthy parenting Shanti Asiatic School arranged a special session for the parents with an experienced counselor Dr Shilpa Jasubhi who is a practicing clinical psychologist, a brain gym expert who has several successful sessions to her credit.

The session focused on appropriate behavior with children, methods to understand them, to listen to them and to refrain from always scolding them. The importance of appreciating children’s effort and setting up democratic norms was also stressed.
Parents were advised to be effective role models and realize that it is their action, not words which cast a deep impact on children. The role of siblings and others (in joint family) was also discussed. The importance of setting limits was given and instances where parents try to overestimate/underestimate children problems were an eye opener. Setting realistic target was the key.

Awareness towards parenting was further built when body language and language that inhibits / shut down communication was dealt. A questionnaire with healthy positive parenting tips was given to reflect upon their role as parents.

The reflective session ended on a light note when several impromptu plays were held, where parents participated in various roles. These highlighted the various facets of communication and what inhibits the same.
