Dr. Ed Sobey’s Workshop @ SAS

World’s experts in learning technology strongly recommend instilling authentic understanding gained through constructivist activities. Schools are most effective in an atmosphere of learning , rather than in one of top-down teaching. Through activities a child learns faster,They apply critical thinking in their analysis and in reporting their projects. The workshop by Dr.Ed Sobey on June 13, 2012 was in a way, a small effort to develop a sense of responsibility for learning and become life long learners.

Dr. Ed Sobey Founder of the Kids Invent Toys™ Program & National Toy Hall of Fame, USA. Creator of “Kids Invent Toys™”, one of America’s leading authorities and experts on developing children’s creativity and using invention and enterprise in learning, conducted a workshop for SAS students of classes VI and VII.

More than 100 students, grouped in numbers of 8, participated with full zeal and zest. Each group was given 4-6 wheels, cardboards, straw, thin woody sticks, glue and other necessary stationary. With this material each group was asked to prepare a car that would cover the farthest distance.

It was thrilling for the students to invent a car of their own and apply the scientific principles which they have already learnt in class. This exercise helped them to give a practical shape to their imagination. The students were able to invent the model of their own choice, by continuously improving it, so that it could travel the farthest distances. They learnt from their mistakes and corrected themselves reaching to a final shape of a model of the car that travelled well.

The feedback that the students reflected was amazing. Some of the students even exercised the same process of learning at home. The parents on the day of the orientation appreciated the efforts the students as well as that of the teachers.
The learning was phenomenal and a lot of fun element was involved.
